Chrysler 300C Luxury

Chrysler 300C: Luxury ride, HEMI power, rear-wheel drive performance, and exclusive and innovative exterior chrome design

The Chrysler 300C model marks the return of the HEMI engine to the Chrysler brand after nearly 50 years. The legendary engine design that powered Chrysler's letter series cars in the 1950s has been re-engineered and reborn as a modern, high-performance, fuel-efficient and durable powerplant known as the all-new 5.7-liter HEMI V8. With 340 hp DIN and 387 pound-per-feet of torque, the Chrysler 300C can go from 0 to 60 mph in just 6.3 seconds and reach an electronically limited top speed of 155 mph.

The Chrysler 300C will be the first modern volume production vehicle produced in North America to feature cylinder deactivation when it goes on sale in Europe and other international markets beginning in the summer of 2004. The Chrysler Group's Multi-Displacement System (MDS) seamlessly turns off the fuel consumption in four cylinders of the 5.7-liter HEMI engine when V8 power is not needed. This provides a world-class combination of outstanding performance, power and very competitive fuel economy.

"Our new generation of vehicles will separate us from the pack," said Dieter Zetsche, President and Chief Executive Officer of the Chrysler Group. "The MDS system on our HEMI V8 will be a first for a modern volume car produced in North America and will deliver a 10 to 20 per cent increase in fuel efficiency."

Transferring all this power to the pavement is Chrysler's new rear-wheel drive architecture. Rear-wheel drive offers improved handling with front wheels steering and rear wheels driving. With tremendous advances in tire technology and electronic stability control, Chrysler brings back the rear-wheel drive passenger sedan.

"The introduction of the Chrysler 300C marks an important new chapter in the evolving history of our brand internationally and is one of the most important episodes of our continuing product offensive," said Thomas Hausch, Executive Director of International Sales and Marketing. "The all-new 300C is a great car with a class-leading list of standard equipment and excellent value. It will play a significant role in further establishing the Chrysler brand in markets outside North America."

The Chrysler 300C Touring - a wagon version of the 300C to be introduced later this year - will expand the model range by building upon the attributes of the Chrysler 300C Sedan. The Chrysler 300C range will be sold in more than 100 countries around the world.

Simply stated, the Chrysler 300C signals a new design direction that will make everything else on the road seem ordinary.

"We wanted to return to the proud, powerful lines that once made American automobiles the envy of the entire industry, but do so in a thoroughly modern way," said Trevor Creed, Senior Vice President of Design. "At the same time, we identified a dramatic new design direction that continues the Chrysler brand's long-standing tradition of innovative design."

The striking new proportions of the 300C were made possible by the decision to move the next generation of Chrysler sedans to rear-wheel drive, after more than 10 years of cab forward front-wheel drive designs. Used widely among premium and luxury brands, the rear-wheel drive configuration gave company designers the freedom to sculpt a longer bonnet and new proportions, while maintaining a spacious interior package.

"Modern elegance and innovation have always been hallmarks of the Chrysler brand, and the 300C illustrates those values in a very strong and proud way, just as the first 'letter series' C-300 did nearly 50 years ago," noted Creed.

From the front, the Chrysler 300C will not be mistaken for any other automobile on the road. The 300C wears the most elegant execution of the Chrysler face yet - the grille is tall and bold, inspired by the memorable V-10-powered Chrysler Chronos concept car that made its debut in 1998 at the North American International Auto Show in Detroit. The newly rendered Chrysler wings flow seamlessly into the grille header and contain the gold seal of the brand, providing a proud and instantly recognizable design cue.

The headlamp shape supports the new face of Chrysler. Interior components of headlamps and taillamps have been given the attention of fine jewelry. The headlamp on the Chrysler 300C model employs a projector low-beam lamp for world-class lighting performance contained in a unique circular lamp bezel which calls attention to itself because of its design and precise execution. The inboard circular shape in the bezel is smaller in size and contains a conventional high beam packaged under a park and turn lamp. The circular theme is carried into the taillamp as well, with a prominent circular shape containing the stop function at the top of the lamp. This lamp also has a unique horizontal stripe graphic delineating turn and back-up functions and pays homage to the Chrysler 300 from the late Fifties.

Special attention was given to the design of the exterior mirrors and door handles. The mirrors were shaped in the wind tunnel to maximize aerodynamic efficiencies and minimize the mass of the structural components to achieve a light and unobtrusive appearance. The chrome or body-color mirror head supports the upscale appearance objective. The door handles as well are a new pull style design that look substantial, feel good in the hand, and add to the overall upscale appearance of the car.

The body is finished off by a handsome body-color and bright molding that carries on to the front fender. On the Chrysler 300C's trunk lid is a badge that carries the name 300C with the word HEMI underneath it, letting everyone know that there is something special under the bonnet. Large tires on standard 18-inch wheels suggest ample reserves of power. The large five-spoke, split-spoke rims leave plenty of room for serious brake hardware.

Chromed dual exhaust pipes on the 300C model announce the long-awaited return to HEMI V8 power and performance after nearly 50 years for a Chrysler car.

"The new Chrysler 300C embodies what we call a holistic approach to design," said Creed. "Every line, every angle and every proportion must not only work together inside and out, but provide a visual promise for the rest of the automobile, including the driving experience."

In keeping with this holistic approach, Chrysler 300C's interior continues the noble, proud themes of the exterior, with a more upright windscreen and seating position which offers a spacious feel. The seating position itself has been raised 2.5 inches higher than the Chrysler 300M to enhance the command-of-the-road feel and aid in easy ingress and egress.

Distinctive materials and textures provide a handcrafted feel and provide an upscale feeling to the interior.

"Chrysler 300C's beauty is more than skin deep," said Creed. "We paid a lot of attention to the small details, individual appointments and fits, which together convey a feeling of richness to both the driver and passengers."

For example, faux tortoise shell is used on the steering wheel rim, shifter knob and inside door pulls, complemented by chrome door handles and other accents inspired by the 1998 Chrysler Chronos show car. Evolving the design seen on the current Chrysler 300M, a four-gauge instrument cluster with light silver faces and chrome trim rings conveys a precision appearance setting the new standard for all Chrysler cars. The center stack of the instrument panel contains an analogue clock and highlights the new HVAC controls and radios that were designed with minimal gaps and efforts to achieve a precise feel and world-class appearance objectives. A new premium radio with an integrated navigation system is also available. The center stack area is in satin silver on the Chrysler 300C. The centerpiece of the center console is the shift knob finished in available premium leather and faux tortoise shell that highlights the new gated shifter and five-speed automatic transmission for greater driving enjoyment.

A two-tone color treatment on the interior featuring light colored lower surfaces conveys spaciousness and gives the Chrysler 300C a sporty, yet opulent feel inside. The rear seats have a center folding armrest with integrated cup holder, and are configured with a 60/40 split for added versatility.

"Just like the all-new Crossfire, the Chrysler 300C embodies the very essence of the Chrysler brand," said Creed.

"Rear-wheel drive offers the best vehicle balance and handling, and a performance-car experience without any compromises in performance or premium feel," said Eric Ridenour. "It separates the steering and acceleration duties. This eliminates compromises and enables enhanced performance and handling."

Rear-wheel drive architecture allowed the design studio significantly to alter the overall profile of the vehicle for premium and performance proportions. Most notable are a longer bonnet and front fenders, short front overhang, and improved ride, handling and impressive stance that comes with the tires pushed to the corners.

Advancements in technology in the last five years enable a rear-wheel drive large car to perform with all-season capability. Electronic Stability Programme (ESP), All-speed Traction Control System (TCS), advanced Anti-lock Brake System (ABS) and tire technologies have reached new levels of performance.

The rear-wheel drive system mounts the engine and transmission in a north/south configuration in the vehicle. It includes a two-piece driveshaft that incorporates a unique Chrysler Group collapsing feature to enhance passenger protection during frontal and offset frontal impacts. The remainder of the system consists of a cradle-mounted rear differential and two half-shafts. The rear differential is double isolated and precision machined for significantly reduced noise, vibration and harshness.

Chrysler 300C is engineered to offer a smooth, luxurious ride while maintaining a feeling of control and confidence. Effort was also focused on minimizing noise, vibration and harshness, resulting in a driving experience that is smooth and quiet. For markets outside North America, Chrysler 300C has a unique steering, suspension calibration and wheel and tire set-up that is adapted towards higher speed ride and handling. The HEMI-powered Chrysler 300C offers athletic and nimble suspension and steering characteristics, with the front and rear suspension tuned for greater handling performance. A well damped ride, with reduced body roll, gives the customer a precise and responsive driving experience. "We designed the suspension to be very responsive while delivering superb ride and comfort," said Eric Ridenour. "The front and rear suspension are all-new. We used a short and long arm design in the front and a sophisticated five-bar link, independent rear suspension. The suspension will delight performance drivers with excellent handling and improved responsiveness while also providing impressively smooth ride characteristics."

An all-new short and long arm (SLA) front suspension provides excellent handling and ride characteristics. High upper control arms, which place the upper ball joints above the tires, provide suspension articulation that helps keep the tires perpendicular to the road during cornering for high adhesion. Lateral links and tension struts, rather than one-piece lower control arms, position the lower ends of the steering knuckles. These links attach to the steering knuckle via separate ball joints. Multiple bushings offer flexibility to tune for ride and comfort. This architecture creates a virtual pivot point for the tire to reduce reaction to bumps that would otherwise be perceptible at the steering wheel.

The five-link independent rear suspension system allows independent tuning of handling and ride comfort so that each can be maximized for a no-compromise situation. The rear suspension has been developed to complement the performance of the front suspension for a very balanced vehicle.

Multiple aluminum links maintain independent control of camber and toe during suspension movement for excellent handling. Multiple bushings offer flexibility to tune for ride and comfort. Stabilizer bar attachments to the knuckles provide maximum response to vehicle lean in the Chrysler 300C.

The rear suspension is isolated from the passenger compartment to provide a quiet and smooth ride. All rear suspension components, except the coil springs and shock absorbers, mount on a steel cradle that attaches to the body structure through four large rubber mounts. Premium urethane jounce bumpers provide smooth progressive engagement over sharp bumps to minimize harshness.

Power rack and pinion steering has an overall ratio of 16.1:1 on all models. The steering effort is varied to balance comfort and ease of operation with feel and responsiveness requirements. The steering gear mounts to the suspension cradle through two spool isolators that are tuned to minimize road noise while delivering steering responsiveness. Friction is minimized to enhance steering precision.

The steering systems deliver light parking efforts, without compromising steering performance at speed. In addition, the systems are also tuned to match the handling capabilities of the vehicles.

Four-wheel disc brakes are standard on all Chrysler 300C models. Ducts in the front fascia direct cooling airflow to the front brakes, reducing front brake temperatures by up to 15 per cent in heavy use for enhanced performance and longer lining life. High caliper stiffness facilitates firm pedal feel and linear response with increasing demand for braking effort. To reduce rolling resistance for better fuel economy, all models use low-drag calipers.

Designed with a large, easy-to-read screen, voice guidance and a number of unique options, the DVD-based navigation system has features that will appeal to both road travellers and music enthusiasts alike.

The navigation radio system is housed in the center of the vehicle's dashboard, which is convenient to both the driver and passenger. This system features a large 5.8 inch full-color display, MP3 player compatibility, AM/FM stereo, six-disc CD system and navigation system in one unit. An eight-way joystick allows the user to scroll through the navigation menus and icons quickly and effortlessly.

The system guides the user through the drive route providing voice commands, kilometer by kilometer, turn by turn until the final destination is reached. Destinations may be entered into the system 10 different ways, and the screen may be viewed as a detailed map or enlarged to be viewed turn by turn.

"With MP3 capability and the option to add various entertainment and communication features, the navigation system is clearly in the forefront of information and entertainment technology," said Jack Withrow, Director of Vehicle Entertainment and Communications. "The system effectively calculates the quickest and most accurate route and immediately redirects the driver should he or she veer off path, you may never have to stop and ask for directions again."

The navigation system features a single DVD solution that contains mapping, points of interest and business phone numbers (where digitized mapping data and information are available). The single DVD solution eliminates the need to handle and store multiple discs required in CD-based solutions.

In addition, route calculations may be made quickly with Alpine's proprietary software algorithms which provide routing information within 10 seconds. This is crucial when a driver misses a turn and needs an immediate re-route.

The navigation system receives its GPS, or global positioning system, signals from up to eight satellites to display the position and direction of the vehicle. A gyroscope and the vehicle's speed sensor enable the system to display the present vehicle position even in locations where a GPS signal may not be available. When a destination is entered, the navigation system uses data from the DVD to quickly calculate a route.

The newest vehicle to make its debut in the Chrysler Group lineup, the Chrysler 300C with rear-wheel drive technology is the total package of engineering and technological advancements designed to protect as well as perform. The Chrysler 300C marks the Chrysler Group's return to a HEMI-powered rear-wheel drive car platform after nearly five decades. Many manufacturers of premium and performance sedans retained rear-wheel drive because of the superior performance and handling characteristics. The rear-wheel drive configuration of the Chrysler 300C gave designers the freedom and flexibility to create a strong body structure with new dimensions. Advancements in technology enabled Chrysler Group engineers to develop a rear-wheel drive large-car platform with all-season capability.

Mazda MX Crossport

Mazda MX Crossport : Crossover design concept merges the elegant speediness of a sports car with the tough practicality of an SUV

The Mazda MX Crossport design concept represents a new direction Mazda is considering as it works to expand its line-up of successful new-generation products. The crossover-type vehicle combining strong styling cues from the company's flagship RX-8 sports car with the more practical packaging of sport-utility vehicle.

The powerful, bold, three-dimensional identity of the concept car was created to be both surprising and uniquely eye-catching. It is a new frontier for Mazda, leading the company into a new segment, expanding the definition of Zoom-Zoom from both a design and packaging standpoint.

"Mazda has momentum right now and one of our immediate challenges is to harness this momentum and create new products that will help us strengthen our results in the major markets around the world," stated Mazda design director Moray S. Callum. "I challenged our design team to further evolve and expand our existing design DNA. The result of this challenge is the MX Crossport, which was designed very much with the North American market in mind."

Design is an important element of all Mazda products, and, as such, the MX Crossport is first and foremost a design concept. It is being presented in Detroit as a design study, not an engineering study.

Chief Designer Koizumi, whose previous works include the successful MAZDA6, calls this concept an advanced frontier for Mazda, meaning the concept merges the speedy and athletic image of Mazda's best sports car with the toughness and practicality of an SUV. The result is a vehicle that takes Mazda and its Zoom-Zoom image into an area it has never before ventured.

Chief designer Koizumi expresses his confidence in the design by stating, "Design language in a product like this is very important. No matter the powertrain or the segment in which the vehicle will compete, the design must have the same powerful Zoom-Zoom language. The cockpit has also been designed to perfectly meet the powerfulness of the exterior design."

"Our goal was to design a vehicle that transcends the existing categories of SUV and crossovers and steps into the realm of sports car. We want to let people experience the world of sports cars every time they get behind the wheel," Koizumi added.

The dynamic nature of the interior design was created to communicate a visual sense of motion and speed and to test potential design themes that could be incorporated into a production model.

While Mazda has not yet officially confirmed a production model based on the MX Crossport, the company has stated that it intends to expand its line of new-generation Zoom-Zoom products for the North American market and beyond. The MX Crossport is an important conceptual step forward in the process.

The 2006 Sonata builds on Hyundai's commitment to safety leadership, which began with Hyundai's standard fitment of side-impact airbags in all Hyundai models beginning in the 2003 model year. (Hyundai was the first non-luxury brand to offer side-impact airbags on all its models as standard equipment.) Hyundai recently launched the all-new Tucson compact SUV, the only under-$20,000 vehicle in the U.S. market with six standard airbags and standard Electronic Stability Control. All future Hyundai SUVs will feature this level of standard safety equipment.

With the all-new Sonata, Hyundai brings a new level of standard safety content to the mid-size sedan segment. Every Sonata is equipped with advanced dual front airbags, seat mounted side-impact airbags for the driver and front seat passenger, and side curtain airbags designed to help protect the driver, front seat passenger and the outboard rear seat passengers. In addition, the front seats feature active head restraints for extra protection against whiplash in rear end collisions.

The addition of standard Electronic Stability Control, standard Traction Control System, and standard ABS with Electronic Brake Force Distribution brings a new level of driving assurance to the mid-size sedan segment buyer. "The benefit of Electronic Stability Control in reducing single-vehicle SUV accidents is clear, but our own research and that done by NHTSA and IIHS indicate there is also a compelling case for equipping passenger cars with this technology," said John Krafcik of Hyundai. "At Hyundai, we're doing our part to accelerate the implementation of this technology across more vehicle segments. We'd be delighted if other manufacturers choose to follow our lead."

All Sonata models also feature shingle-style rear seat head rests for improved visibility, three-point seat belts for all seating positions, seatbelt pretensioners, load limiters and the child seat LATCH system.

The all-new Sonata was designed with safety as a priority -- from a class-leading, comprehensive list of standard safety features to a robust body structure with engineered crumple zones designed to intelligently absorb impacts. Based on preliminary testing, the 2006 Sonata is projected to perform at a five-star level in U.S. government frontal and side impact testing.

The all-new 2006 Sonata is larger, with a more contemporary, sophisticated design execution than the previous version. The new 2006 Sonata is two inches longer, two inches taller, and features a one-inch longer wheelbase. Sonata is wider than key competition including the Toyota Camry, Honda Accord, and Nissan Altima; an advantage that delivers both a strong stance and increased interior room. Key exterior design elements include a bold, concave hood dome, distinctive rear-door cut line, strong Z-lined body-to-fascia interfaces and four-barrel jeweled projector headlights. V6 models are equipped with chrome-tipped dual exhausts that hint at the 237-plus horsepower under the hood.

The 2006 Hyundai Sonata offers a roomy, comfortable cabin with over 120 cubic feet of total interior volume -- a level of spaciousness that places it in the government's large car category. Compared to the previous Sonata, the all-new 2006 Sonata offers increases in all categories of legroom, headroom, and shoulder room.

To improve overall ergonomics, seating comfort, and entry/egress, Sonata's seating position height has been increased an inch. Accessibility and ergonomics are further improved with increased distance between the driver and the A-pillar and more room between the seat cushion and the headliner.

Sonata's trunk volume has increased 16%, and now features a 2.3 cubic feet advantage over the Honda Accord. Its design is highlighted by a four-bar link hinge mechanism augmented with two assist struts -- all to maximize trunk access and to assure that items put in the trunk remain undamaged by the trunk-closing hardware.

Tilt steering is standard on all Sonata models, with a telescoping function added on LX models. Every Sonata is equipped with a standard AM/FM/CD/MP3 audio system, with supplemental steering wheel-mounted audio controls standard on GLS and LX models. Power windows are also standard equipment, including an auto-down/auto-up driver's window with pinch protection. Heated leather seats are standard on the LX model.

Sonata provides occupants a smooth ride combined with excellent roadholding ability thanks to an advanced, state-of-the-art, four-wheel independent suspension system with increased suspension stiffness and improved suspension geometry. The front suspension uses double wishbone technology with coil springs, gas-filled hydraulic shock absorbers and anti-roll bar. The double-wishbone suspension consists of upper and lower A-arms and features an L-shaped lower arm design that reduces vibration while increasing handling precision. Bushing size has been increased to better isolate road impact and wheel vibration. An isolated top strut mount further improves ride quality.

The sophisticated five-link rear suspension features a trailing link, two longitudinal links and an upper A-arm. This independent coil-spring suspension design helps distribute load impact and vibrations in order to provide better ride comfort. In addition, the upper arm has been moved to the lower cross member to isolate wheel vibration for improved ride quality. This advanced design provides the Sonata with excellent handling characteristics without sacrificing ride quality.

The new Sonata also delivers cabin quietness and reduced wind noise. Hyundai designers increased the strength and stiffness of the subframe and body structure to further reduce engine noise and road noise in the cabin. When compared against key competitors Camry and Accord, the 2006 Sonata is quieter at idle, quieter at 60 mph, quieter at wide-open throttle and has significantly less wind noise than both competitors at 68 mph.

The Sonata GL features standard equipment found only on mid-size sedans costing thousands of dollars more. Tramontana handmade luxury sports car from Spain

Tramontana: Limited production handmade luxury sports car from Spain is crafted with fine materials and powered by a 500HP V12 engine

The new a.d. Tramontana luxury sports car has been developed in Spain with a combination of the philosophy of hand-craftsmanship and aeronautical engineering. Seeing this vehicle on main street, however, will not be easy, as the company will produce only twelve units a year -- and each will cost 600 thousand dollars. The Tramontana combines exclusivity and differentiation with the best materials and a handmade production.

The Tramontana design recovers long-forgotten classical models. The other main source of inspiration is fighter planes, for example lateral intake vents and, especially, the tandem-like position of the two seats, that allows the perfection of the equilibrium. Lovers of sports cars will appreciate the perfect weight symmetry offered by the position of the seats.

Each unit will be unique, as the production process will include a large amount of customer-ordered specifications, from customized inscriptions on the chassis to an ergonomic study of the client. The car will have a central V12 engine with more than 500 hp.

The chassis is made of aeronautical aluminum that contributes to a new structural system combining a non-deformable area with eight impact-absorption areas. These characteristics offer such a safety level that is comparable to a professional racing car.

The body is from carbon fiber with insertions of fine wood, stainless steel, and gold. The wood, for example, is treated with the ancient Japanese Urishi natual lacquer technique.

Tramontana produces luxurious super cars for collectors.

Pontiac Solstice

Apprentice Car : Pontiac Solstice early order program for the first thousand roadsters with exclusive badging begins at 2 PM EDT Friday

Pontiac tapped the talents of Apprentice contestants to kick off an early order program for the Solstice roadster, available this summer. More than just a simple task on the show, the winning team's work will be the centerpiece of a campaign to sell the first 1000 vehicles when customer ordering begins Friday at Pontiac dealers nationwide.

"When people see the Solstice -- whether it's at an auto show or in an Apprentice task-- it almost always evokes a passionate response," says Mark-Hans Richer of Pontiac.

The first 1000 cars will have serial numbers one through 1000, exclusive badging and a certificate of authenticity. They will be available on a first-come, first-served order basis only during this exclusive early order program at participating Pontiac dealers. Even when the first 1000 Solstices are sold, additional orders can be placed through the normal dealer network.

To gain the opportunity to score one of the first 1000 Solstices, customers completed an online registration form that included a unique identification number. Qualified buyers brought their registration form to participating dealers nationwide at 2:00 p.m. EDT on Friday, April 15. If the first 1000 units were already sold, the customer could choose to be placed on a waiting list, or simply place a regular Solstice order through their dealership. The early order program concluded on Sunday, April 24.

"We're in the middle of a product resurgence at Pontiac, and vehicles like the Solstice and G6 are key components," said Richer. "The confidence we have in these new products allows us to make some bold moves, like our appearance on The Apprentice, which resulted in the development of the Solstice sales brochure customers will receive at dealerships beginning April 15."

Solstice, described on The Apprentice as a "sexy, gorgeous two-seat roadster," combines contemporary sheet metal and a rock-solid chassis with a rev-happy 2.4 liter, 177 horsepower four-cylinder engine that provide exhilarating acceleration, and spirited handling and braking for around $20,000. It is based on the enormously popular concept car of the same name launched at the 2002 North American International Auto Show.

When equipped with the standard 5-speed manual transmission, the Forester 2.5 XT Limited can accelerate from zero to 60 mph in under six seconds.

Subaru features symmetrical all-wheel drive as standard equipment on the vehicles in its product line.

Porsche 911 Carrera Cabriolet

Porsche 911 Carrera Cabriolet: All-wheel drive sports car convertibles feature muscular frame, enhanced handling, and an electronic soft top

Porsche's new 911 Carrera 4 and 911 Carrera 4S Cabriolet sports cars are all-wheel drive versions of its popular 911 open-top models. The new sports cars have a more dynamic and muscular with wider rear tires and rear bodywork that is 1-3/4 inches wider than the two-wheel drive 911 Carrera and 911 Carrera S Cabriolets.

Both new all-wheel drive 911 Cabriolet models are equipped with an electronic soft top that opens or closes in just twenty seconds for open-air driving pleasure and convenience and can be deployed or retracted with the car moving at up to 30 mph. At just a little more than 92 lbs., the convertible top helps provide a lower center of gravity and a higher degree of lateral dynamics.

For optimum occupant safety, the 911 Carrera 4 and 911 Carrera 4S Cabriolets are equipped with the Porsche Side Impact Protection (POSIP) system that features separate head and thorax airbags for both driver and front seat passenger. Also standard are two full-size frontal airbags and three-point seat belt latch tensioners and belt force limiters for the front seats. Rollover safety features include two ultra-strong steel tubes in the A-pillars and two supplemental safety bars located behind the rear seats that automatically deploy in the event of a rollover.

The 2006 Porsche 911 Carrera 4 Cabriolet is powered by the proven 3.6-liter, flat-six cylinder 325 hp (SAE) engine that propels the car from 0 to 60 mph in 5.1 seconds and to a top test track speed of 174 mph. The 911 Carrera 4S Cabriolet is equipped with a larger 3.8-liter power plant that develops 355 hp (SAE) and accelerates the car from 0 to 60 mph in 4.7 seconds and to a top test track speed of 179 mph.

Like their all-wheel drive 911 coupe brothers, the Porsche Stability Management (PSM) system on these new Cabriolet models has two new functions to enhance braking. First, if PSM detects that the driver has abruptly taken his or her foot off the accelerator, the system pre-fills the brake calipers to reduce the gap between the pads and the rotors, which helps shorten stopping distances. The second system features a hydraulic pump that works as a brake assist, applying full braking power during a hard stop even if the driver has depressed the brake pedal quickly but without full force.

As with the previous version, the 911 Carrera 4 Cabriolet's all-wheel drive system has a multi-disk viscous coupling that transfers between 5 and 40 percent of the driving force permanently to the front wheels. This feature provides excellent handling in curves, straight-line stability at high speeds, and improved traction on slippery roads.

To further enhance handling, for the first time the 911 Carrera 4 Cabriolet models are available with the new Porsche Active Suspension Management (PASM) system. Standard on the 911 Carrera 4S and an option on the 911 Carrera 4, PASM allows the driver to select between the comfort of a Grand Touring car and the track-ready precision of a genuine high performance sports car at the touch of a button.

The 2006 Porsche 911 Carrera 4 Cabriolet and 911 Carrera 4S Cabriolet will be introduced in North America in November 2005. The 911 Carrera 4 Cabriolet U.S. and Canadian prices are $87,100, while the 911 Carrera 4S Cabriolet will list for $97,100.

2006 Honda Civic

2006 Honda Civic: Completely redesigned coupes, sedans, and hybrids have sporty exterior styling, functional interiors, and advanced powertrains

The Honda Civic has been the best selling retail compact car in America for the past nine years. As the Civic has been re-invented, each new model has set new standards in the automotive industry with its innovative packaging, attractive styling, high fuel economy, low emissions, fun-to-drive performance, reliability, and safety.

The 2006 Civic represents a transformation of design and dynamics. Multiple powertrains for 2006 range from 197-horsepower high performance to 50 mpg gas-sipping hybrid to an all-around performer with two body styles, representing one of the most diverse vehicles in the industry. An expressive and futuristic design with exciting performance and a dedication to providing advanced safety technology set the Civic apart from the competition.

New powertrain technologies include a new, even more intelligent i-VTEC engine with advanced valve control, and a fourth generation IMA Civic Hybrid powertrain that delivers higher performance and improved fuel economy with lower emissions

Some vehicles in the compact segment can provide fun-to-drive performance, or safety, or environmental performance; but only the Civic delivers these traits simultaneously along with value, style and sophistication - with models custom tailored for a performance enthusiast, a technology enthusiast, and a mainstream buyer.

Both Civic Sedan and Coupe have entirely new dimensions that make each vehicle wider and shorter in height for a sleek, futuristic appearance that also benefits packaging efficiency, handling and ride quality.

For 2006, Honda is advancing multiple powertrain technologies to meet the needs of a diverse Civic customer by offering a 197-horsepower Civic Si, a 50 mpg Civic Hybrid, and a stylish and sophisticated Civic Sedan and Civic Coupe. No other vehicle in the segment covers as much ground as the Civic with its two body styles, three engines, four transmissions and five trim levels. All totaled, there are over 148 model, trim, option and color combinations for the 2006 Civic.

Some cars offer sporty performance across an entire model range, but compromise on fuel economy, ride comfort and/or safety. Others provide good fuel economy and ride comfort, but offer minimal fun-to-drive performance. The Civic brings it all together by combining performance, fuel economy, safety technology, and sophistication.

The Civic Si showcases the high-performance potential of the Civic platform to the highest degree. The Civic Si can carve through twisty roads like a sports car, sprint from 0-60 quickly and still provide the everyday practicality of a Civic.

Motor Trend magazine selected the Honda Civic as the 2006 Motor Trend Car of the Year. "Honda deserves a standing ovation for not playing it safe again," said Motor Trend editor-in-chief Angus MacKenzie. "With the sizzling Si, a sleek coupe, an elegant sedan and a Hybrid that averages 50 miles per gallon, each model shines through with what Motor Trend looks for when crowning Car of the Year."

Pontiac G6

At SEMA, Roush received the best new GM exterior award from General Motors for their dramatically styled Roush Signature Edition Pontiac G6 sedan.

Director of Design of Specialty Vehicles Kip Wasenko said GM is proud of the new Pontiac G-6 design, noting that "The Roush enhancements demonstrate the potential of personalization that an owner could apply to the new clean design."

"This was a fantastic project," said Paul White of Roush. "The G6 is a very well-designed product that lends itself beautifully to design and performance enhancements. We enjoyed an excellent working relationship with General Motors' design and marketing groups, and our seamless access to Roush's design, engineering, and manufacturing resources allowed us to develop and apply an extensive modification package in record time."

White said that the project "gave us an excellent opportunity to showcase Roush's full-service capabilities, and the G6 is our kind of car -- bold, nimble, with great lines. Our modification package was designed to enhance those attributes and generate enthusiasm for a derivative package."

Roush used their engineering, design, modeling, prototyping, and manufacturing services to take this project from the sketchpad to the showroom floor at SEMA, with much of the work done in Roush's Livonia Design Studio.

Roush design engineers produced a dramatic appearance package that included a new hood, front and rear fascias, side rocker panels, rear spoiler, forged 19-inch wheels, exhaust tips, modified headlamps, Sparco seating, and Autometer gauges. The Roush Performance package includes an AEM Cold Air Induction Kit, Brembo brakes, DC Sports strut tower brace, Eibach spring lowering kit, and a GM performance exhaust. Wrapped in Merles Opus Orange Yellow paint with distinctive Roush badging, the Roush Edition G6 closes the gap between road car and road racer.

The program illustrates Roush's ability to effectively partner with OEMs as they embrace the public's growing enthusiasm for derivative vehicles. Roush, with its OEM caliber design studio and state-of-the art manufacturing and painting facilities, is unique among automotive suppliers in its ability to design, develop, and manufacture vehicle components under one roof. The Roush Edition G6 clearly demonstrates how creative design, effective OEM/supplier collaboration, seamless services, and streamlined processes combine to produce award-winning results.

Roush provides engineering, testing, prototype development, and manufacturing services to the transportation industry.

Kia Soul

Kia Soul : Crossover utility concept features wrap-around windshield, strong wheel flares, a sloped roofline, and reconfigurable cargo space
Kia's Soul concept car will make its premiere at the North American International Auto Show in Detroit. The Kia Soul concept is a crossover utility vehicle with a sporty bold look that builds on design cues from the Kia Mesa concept vehicle.

A wrap-around windshield, strong wheel flares, stylish front headlamps and a sloped roofline convey an athletic attitude for the Soul, which is geared toward an active lifestyle. Though small on the outside, it is big inside with practical interior room and a reconfigurable cargo space. The rear lift gate includes a unique drawer for wet or muddy items such as a wetsuit or hiking shoes.

zaZen 2007

zaZen : Transparent concept car with holographic brake light and smoothly contoured roof dome made of high-tech polycarbonate

Rinspeed and Bayer MaterialScience have been working on zaZen, a revolutionary new concept car. A large third brake light shines out of what looks like a floating, transparent teardrop roof. The technical revolution in the car's design is that the transparent rear window has been turned into a luminous holographic area.

zaZen, with its holographic brake light and smoothly contoured single-section roof dome made of the high-tech polycarbonate Makrolon, marks the beginning of a new era in lighting technology in vehicle design. The name of the new concept car was chosen to reflect the overall attitude with which both companies have driven the entire project forward over a period of many months: a special form of insight that is only attainable if you are prepared to give up preconceived ideas.

This highly transparent four-wheeled creation, the product of one vision and many imaginative ideas, is currently taking shape at Esoro. The entire roof dome down to the belt line is made of a single sheet of transparent Bayer polycarbonate. The material can be made non-transparent at the press of a button.

Because the transparency can simply be switched on and off, it means that any superfluous knobs and displays on the dashboard can be simply faded out so that the driver can concentrate on what is most important, the speed indicator. And instead of a living-room atmosphere, the occupants sit in glass-like plastic seat shells in a bright and friendly orange color.

In za Zen, everything has been reduced to essentials. The extremely organically designed body exerts a quiet fascination with its mineral-white color, achieved through the use of millions of tiny precious Swarovski crystals protected by a self-healing polyurethane clear coat.

zaZen will make its first appearance in February at the Geneva Motor Show.

In addition to Rinspeed and Bayer MaterialScience, the following companies are involved in building and designing the zaZen:

Borbet
Esoro
KW
Protoscar
Recaro
Sharp
Strahle Hess
Swarovski

Dodge Charger 2007 SRT8 Super Bee

Dodge Charger : 2007 SRT8 Super Bee has 6.1-liter HEMI, front and rear fender logos, and contrasting yellow seat and steering stitching

A pair of names familiar to many automotive enthusiasts are again part of the Dodge performance lineup with the return of the Super Bee nameplate for the 2007 Dodge Charger SRT8 and the TorRed exterior color for the 2006 Dodge Charger Daytona R/T.

Before the 2007 Dodge Charger SRT8, the only previous Super Bee Dodge Charger was the 1971.

"The Dodge Charger embodies modern American muscle, and at the same time, carries on a great performance heritage," said George Murphy of Chrysler. "It was only natural to give a nod to that heritage with the re-introduction of a famous Dodge performance nameplate and a high-impact heritage paint name."

The 2007 Dodge Charger SRT8 Super Bee is the first special edition of the Charger on steroids from Chrysler Group's Street and Racing Technology (SRT). It features Detonator Yellow exterior color with black hood and deck-lid face, Super Bee logos on front and rear fenders, and contrasting yellow stitching on the seats, steering wheel, and shift knob.

Powered by the SRT-engineered 6.1-liter HEMI V-8 producing 425 hp and 420 lb.-ft. of torque, the Dodge Charger SRT8's powertrain represents a new level in HEMI performance, with 85 additional horsepower -- 25 percent more than the 5.7-liter HEMI.

Other SRT enhancements include functional, performance-oriented styling, world-class ride and handling, race-inspired interior appointments and benchmark braking. All together, the 2007 Dodge Charger SRT8 Super Bee is capable of 0-60 mph in the low 5 seconds, 0-100-0 in under 17 seconds.

The legendary Super Bee nameplate made its debut in 1968 within the Dodge Coronet line. As the newest member of Dodge's Scat Pack performance group, the 1968 Super Bee originally carried an MSRP of just over $3,000. It was offered as a Dodge Charger only in its last model year, 1971. Restored examples fetch between $80,000 to $100,000 today.

Chrysler Pacifica : 2006 limited and touring sedan-SUV crossover models with front-wheel-drive and all-wheel-drive configurations

Chrysler Pacifica: 2006 limited and touring sedan-SUV crossover models with front-wheel-drive and all-wheel-drive configurations

The 2006 Chrysler Pacifica lineup now includes another option for crossover customers. The newest choice is the Chrysler Pacifica Limited model with front-wheel drive.

"The addition of the Chrysler Pacifica Limited with front-wheel drive offers consumers more choices," said Chrysler's Ann Fandozzi. "Some of our customers have told us they wanted the top-of-the-line Chrysler Pacifica Limited, but didn't have a need for all-wheel drive. The new front-wheel-drive option on the Chrysler Pacifica Limited model fills that niche."

With an entry-level five passenger Chrysler Pacifica model, a nicely equipped six-passenger Touring model and a top-of-the-line Limited model, the Chrysler Pacifica offers the best features of an SUV, car and minivan all rolled into one stylish vehicle.

The 2006 Chrysler Pacifica features waves of value with two-row, five-passenger seating. Second-row seats fold flat, offering 92.2 cu. ft. of available cargo space. The 2006 Chrysler Pacifica is powered by a standard 3.5-liter SOHC 24-valve V-6 engine mated to a four-speed automatic transmission with AutoStick.

The 2006 Chrysler Pacifica Touring model offers a second wave of value as a well-equipped, stylishly refined vehicle. With "2+2+2" three-row, six passenger, fold-flat seating and 79.5 cu. ft. of cargo space, the Pacifica Touring model readily adapts to active lifestyles. In addition to the standard features on the 2006 Chrysler Pacifica, Pacifica Touring models equipped with front-wheel drive include a power 10-way driver seat, tire pressure monitor system, HomeLink universal transceiver and 17-inch aluminum wheels. Chrysler Pacifica Touring models equipped with all-wheel drive also include standard premium leather seats.

Optional equipment for the 2006 Pacifica Touring model includes first- and second-row power heated bucket seats, three-row supplemental side curtain air bags, traction control on front-wheel-drive models, power liftgate, ParkSense rear back-up system, 19-inch chrome-clad wheels, factory-installed SIRIUS satellite radio, power adjustable pedals, power moon roof, a navigation system with GPS, and hands-free communication.

2007 Nissan Quest Minivan

2007 Nissan Quest Minivan: Redesigned interior, revised exterior, enhanced quality, and a bevy of entertainment and technical features

The Nissan Quest minivan has undergone a major transformation for the 2007 model year, complete with a redesigned interior, refined exterior appearance, new high-quality materials and attention to detail, and an array of new available features including Bluetooth hands-free phone system and an in-dash CD6 with MP3 playback and auxiliary audio input.

Quest remains one of the roomiest front-wheel drive minivans in its segment, with the widest opening doors for easy access to the standard fold-away 2nd and 3rd row seats. For 2007, the 3rd row seat now offers integrated auto-folding headrests and spring assist for easier operation.

"When Quest was introduced, it redefined the segment with its emphasis on combining car-like performance, innovative style, sporty appearance and exceptional practicality and versatility," said Nissan's Brad Bradshaw. "The enhancements for 2007 make the Quest more flexible and accommodating than ever."

The instrument panel has been redesigned to provide a more traditional layout than the original. The large gauges have been moved directly in front of the driver, from the previous central location. The shifter lever for the 5-speed automatic transmission is located in the center portion of the instrument panel below the center-mounted 7-inch color information display screen.

An advanced DVD-based navigation system with 7-inch color display is also offered. In addition, the new instrument panel features a revised Human Machine Interface (HMI) design for the available dual-zone HVAC controls, an integrated sunglass holder and lower center storage compartment. The right side of the instrument panel includes a large glove compartment.

Another addition for 2007 is an available fixed center console between the front seats. The center console includes a large storage box with a hidden lower compartment. Quest models without the fixed center console feature a front row folding tray table. New trim has been added, along with chrome bezels surrounding gauges and other trim pieces.

"The new Quest interior provides a great space for the driver, with an incredible attention to the layout and the look, tactile feel and smooth operation of all the controls and switches," said Bradshaw.

Quest also excels in terms of space management, with its long 124.0-inch wheelbase, 77.6-inch width and 67.3-inch front and rear track providing an overall interior volume of 211.9 cubic feet, one of the largest interior volumes of any front-wheel drive minivan. Quest's sliding door openings measure 33.8 inches.

Special attention is also paid to front seat dimensions, with large first row shoulder room. The seats themselves are a furniture-style design, reinforcing the design concept of an urban loft. A new Chili color is offered with the leather-appointed seats.

The 2007 Quest continues to advance the concept of flexibility and spontaneity. The fold-away 2nd and 3rd row seats, with the 3rd row folding flat, do not require the owner to remove the seats in order to create a large, fully usable storage area. The Quest's ample length and width allow for carrying large items on the floor with the rear door closed.

The Quest's 2nd row seats fold down and drop forward to the floor. The 3rd row, which has been totally rethought for 2007, easily folds into a storage well in the floor. Unlike the previous design, which included removable headrests, the new 3rd row seat design includes integrated headrests that fold down with the simple pull of a strap. The rear seat then moves forward and down -- a simple three-step movement that, with the addition of the new spring assist, can be completed with one hand.

The sliding side doors and rear door are available with remote power operation for added convenience, with the switch for the automatic closing power rear door located on the upper left D-pillar for ease of use.

Another unique highlight of the Quest interior is the available SkyView glass-paneled roof, which utilizes roof-mounted glass panels for the 2nd and 3rd rows that help enhance the use of natural light throughout the vehicle.

A full-length rear overhead console is available with a glass-paneled roof. It creates comfort zones with personal reading lamps and air vents.

The front overhead console has been revised for 2007 to include the rear HVAC controls. The new Chili interior color is in addition the previous Gray and Beige interior colors, which are now slightly darker in tone.

Quest's exterior addresses consumer concerns about traditional minivans' conservative imagery. The contemporary body imparts a look of high quality and is marked by an arching roofline that transitions seamlessly off of the A-pillar, a strong shoulder that adds dimension to the body sides, well-defined wheel forms that have a minimal gap with the tire sidewalls and a fluid gesture in the beltline that starts low off of the headlights and kicks up toward the rear of the vehicle.

The rear overhead console houses the Quest's available DVD Mobile Entertainment System's single or dual 8.0-inch fold-down color display screens.

New for 2007 is an attractive, flowing Nissan-signature grille and a new front bumper fascia that is more angular and more aggressive than the previous version. The rear combination taillights have been redesigned and side sills have been added on the 3.5SE model.

The roof rack, while retaining the previous dimensions and high level of utility, is now more squared and has a new satin-look finish. The Quest's door handles are chrome, instead of body color, and new chrome accents enhance the vehicle's clean modern look.

Quest's available wheels have been redesigned for 2007, including the base wheel covers and the 16-inch and 17-inch aluminum-alloy wheels.

As expected from the company behind the popular Nissan 350Z sports car and Maxima sedan, the 2006 Quest offers responsive acceleration and handling.

Every 2007 Quests is equipped with a standard 3.5-liter DOHC 24-valve V6 engine based on Nissan's VQ35 engine series. For use in the Quest, the 3.5-liter V6 is tuned to produce 240 horsepower and 242 pounds per feet of torque.

The engine design includes state-of-the-art design features, such as continuous variable valve timing control system, microfinished crankshaft and camshaft, molybdenum-coated pistons and sequential multi-point electronic fuel injection.

The Quest engine is matched with a smooth, responsive, standard 5-speed electronically controlled automatic transmission with overdrive. The transmission has been improved with a wider gear ratio for 2007 for increased acceleration performance. Traction control systems and vehicle dynamic controls are standard on the 3.5SE and available on 3.5SL models.

Utilizing Nissan's advanced front engine, front-wheel drive, large platform, also found on the popular Nissan Altima, Murano crossover SUV and Maxima, the 2007 Quest features a 4-wheel independent suspension with a rear multi-link design and front and rear stabilizer bars.

A sensor-type tire pressure monitor system is standard.

Power-assisted rack-and-pinion steering is also standard, along with 4-wheel vented disc brakes with anti-lock braking system, brake assis, and electronic brake force distribution.

The Quest's noise, vibration and harshness isolation has been improved for 2007 and both the steering feel and ride quality have been recalibrated to provide a more comfortable driving experience.

Safety is a particularly important part of the minivan purchase decision and the Quest was developed with a strong focus on both active safety -- through the responsive engine, suspension and braking technologies -- and passive safety through a comprehensive set of passive restraint systems.

Standard are head curtain supplemental air bags to help protect 1st, 2nd and 3rd row outboard occupants in side-impact collisions and 3-point seat belts and height-adjustable head restraints for all seating positions. Supplemental front-seat side-impact air bags for thorax protection are standard on 3.5SE and optional on 3.5SL.

Quest also offers a lower anchors and tether for children child seat anchorage system and child safety rear door locks.

Also available for 2007 is a rearview monitor system that utilizes a small camera mounted near the rear license plate that projects a view of what's directly behind the vehicle to the Vehicle Information Center display screen. The system is activated anytime reverse gear is engaged and helps enhance the driver's rearward view.

Quest also includes a standard rear sonar system which provides an audible beep when approaching solid objects while backing up.

During the development process, the design, engineering, manufacturing and supplier teams gathered for nearly a year to enhance both the design and communications processes while the team tackled both large items and small details.

"The result of the team's efforts is a new Quest that is not only well-built, but looks and feels like a quality vehicle the moment you approach it or open a door," said Bradshaw.

Once again for 2007, Quest is available in four well-equipped models: 3.5, 3.5S, 3.5SL and 3.5SE -- each offering an array of standard and available equipment, including ten cupholders, remote keyless entry system, and front row mood lighting.

Other standard equipment includes child friendly B-pillar assist grips, adjustable front row seat belt upper anchors and numerous storage compartments located throughout the Quest. Available equipment includes leather-appointed 1st and 2nd row seating, satellite radio with choice of XM or Sirius providers, an advanced Nissan navigation system, a 265-watt 10-speaker Bose audio system, HomeLink Universal Transceiver and Michelin PAX System with machined 19-inch alloy wheels and Michelin tires with run-flat technology.

A number of options and packages are offered for 2007, including the technology package, with front row center console, satellite radio, Bluetooth Hands-Free Phone System (3.5SL adds rearview monitor, dual-zone climate controls and auto on/off headlights); the Navigation and PAX Package, with GPS navigation, 19-inch alloy wheels, run-flat tires, in-floor cargo organizer (replaces the spare tire) and Vehicle Dynamic Control (3.5SL models only); SL Upgrade Package, with power left hand door, puddle lamps and supplemental front side-impact air bags; and the SL Premium Package, with leather-appointed interior, heated seats, Bose audio system and DVD entertainment system.
