Alfa Romeo team has won

After 28 years, an Alfa Romeo team has won the 23rd edition of the historic Brescia-Rome-Brescia race with an Alfa Romeo 6C 1500 Super Sport from 1928.

Luciano Viaro and Maurizio De Marco have won the twenty-third edition of the Mille Miglia in an Alfa Romeo 6C 1500 Super Sport from 1928, the same car that won the 1928 ‘1000 Miglia’ with the team of Campari-Ramponi, and that in 2004 triumphed in the Nuvolari Grand Prix.
After winning the Argentine ‘Mil Millas’ (1999 and 2001) and the ‘Mille Miglia’ celebrations in Japan (2004), the two drivers from Friuli, members of the official ‘Alfa Romeo Historic Motoring’ team, have reclaimed the prestigious title that Alfa last won 28 years ago. That was in 1977, when Alfa Romeo, with the Germans Hepp-Bauer at the wheel, won the first historic repeat of the most famous race in the world. This year, after 32 timed stages, Luciano Viaro – a timer manufacturer and former Italian champion in reliability trials – claimed victory with a 61-point advantage over the Argentine Carlos Sielecki in a Bugatti T23 from 1923.

The triumph of Viaro - De Marco was accompanied by another two outstanding results for Alfa Romeo cars. Two 6C 1750 GSs, in fact, claimed third and fourth place: the first, from 1930, was driven by the Argentine Fernando Sanchez, while the second, from 1931, was driven by his fellow Argentine Claudio Scalise. Not to mention the excellent performance of the pairing Claramunt and Bertschi, from the official ‘Alfa Romeo Historic Motoring’ team, who took 16th place in an 8C 2300 Le Mans from 1931, a car that, from 1931 to 1934, won the Le Mans 24-hour race no fewer than four consecutive times.
During the four race days, the “most prestigious travelling museum in the world” met with public enthusiasm and curiosity all along the 1600 km of the course, and among the many almost priceless cars that take part in the race every year, the Alfa Romeo models were the most appreciated: they were also the most numerous this year, with no fewer than 38 official and privately-entered cars.
A good omen for Alfa’s resounding success was also provided by the wonderful gift offered by the prestigious watchmakers, Chopard: a limited-edition Mille Miglia chronograph created to celebrate the seventy-fifth anniversary of the victory of Nuvolari and Guidotti in the Alfa Romeo 6C 1750 GS spider in 1930. Vintage cars and classic timepieces have always aroused a similar sentiment: a passion for beautiful, precision instruments. And the victory of the 1500 Super Sport is the best possible proof of that passion.

Here are the overall results for the 23rd edition of the Mille Miglia, 2005

The Bologna Motor Show

An exclusive, elegant stand hosting the brand’s latest offering: the Alfa Brera. There is also a 4x4 circuit for trying out the advanced Q4 technology. We take a look at what’s in store at the Motor Show, open to the public until 11 December.

Three decades and more than thirty million visitors. The Bologna Motor Show, the international car and motorcycle fair – running from 3 to 11 December at ‘BolognaFiere’ – this year celebrates its anniversary and promises to be better than ever. Alfa Romeo will be there to celebrate this extraordinary event, at a stand with tremendous visual impact.
Featuring a series of linear forms, where the overlap of surfaces and volumes creates a dynamic effect, the centre of the display area plays host to the Alfa Café, with elegant "lounge" areas, where visitors can experience the world of Alfa Romeo to the full, surrounded by the cars: the Alfa Brera, Alfa 159 and other current production models (the Alfa GT, Crosswagon Q4, the Alfa 166 flagship and the compact Alfa 147), all fitted with Euro 4 compliant engines.
A comprehensive, multi-faceted range that best expresses Alfa Romeo’s interpretation of the union between ‘sportiness and elegance’, the result of the most sophisticated technology and a truly unique heritage.
Obviously, all eyes will be on the Alfa Brera, the fascinating car making its public debut, which transforms the traditional notion of a coupé into something much more exciting, that of ‘absolute sportiness’. Next to it is the Alfa 159, the prestigious car that on one hand pays tribute to the tremendous history of Alfa Romeo saloons, and on the other represents the start of a new generation of cars by the Italian manufacturer.
The Alfa Brera and Alfa 159, then, are the undisputed stars of the stand, as demonstrated by the two models on display on raised platforms at the centre of an inclined ramp. In addition, a series of LED screens on the red wall of the stand gives visitors a look at the world of the Alfa Brera – a world of style, sportiness and technology.
And don’t miss the interactive presentation of the latest Alfa gems: the Brera and the 159.
The cars are presented through images flashing up on sheets of glass suspended in the void, like a science-fiction film, giving visitors a glimpse of the most particular features of the models, by means of a fascinating play of light and images fully in keeping with the innovative spirit of Alfa Romeo.
If the Alfa stand inside the Motor Show stands out for its style and innovative solutions, then the two outdoor areas reserved for test drives are all designed for sportiness and performance, where the public can admire first-hand the dynamic qualities of the Alfa Brera and the Q4 technology of the Alfa Crosswagon. For the test drives for this model, Alfa has prepared a special off-road circuit where the four-wheel drive model can show off all its 4x4 qualities.

Motor Show opening hours:
Open to the public: from 3 to 11 December
- from 9.00 a.m. to 6.00 p.m. on weekdays

Alfa Brera dream car

Production of the futuristic prototype styled by Giugiaro in 2002 has now got underway. Currently on display at the Royal Palace in Turin to be previewed by news media representatives from all over the world, it will go on sale next January.

When he set his hand to the Brera project, Giorgio Giugiaro, the celebrated car (and not only car) design maestro was convinced that one day that coupé was going to be produced.
«In 2002, when we displayed in Geneva a new model which I termed ‘the sexiest Alfa Romeo sports car’ – remarks Giugiaro – I knew for certain that with a few minor touches it could be mass produced».
Today, the ‘dream car’ born to amaze visitors at car shows has been converted into an industrial product. It will be produced in 20 thousand units per year (a third of which in a Spider version, to go on sale in spring), with an overall investment of 200 million Euro. Deliveries to the dealers will start in January. Highly competitive is the price - between 34 and 45 thousand Euro – of this ‘instant classic’, earmarked to captivate not just Europe, but, in future, also distant countries such as Australia and Japan.
The journalists from all over the world who have been following the debut of the Brera in Turin, in the Swiss Hall of the Royal Palace, and have tested it on Fiat’s Balocco tracks, are enthusiastic about it.
But the Alfa Brera is much more than a fascinating new model. After the Alfa 159, it marks act II in the renaissance of the Brand, as pointed out by Karl Heinz Kalbfell, in charge of the Alfa-Maserati sports car division: «Brera is the flag bearer of a new philosophy and new strategies. The division I am responsible for demonstrates that the company intends to enhance its presence in a growing market segment, characterised by an affluent population, to whom we also offer Maserati models, i.e., two brands that represent the soul and style of Italian sports cars. Alfa Romeo began programming its new industrial scheme a few years ago: the first results were concretised in the 159 and the Brera».
Why a coupe, when a GT version already exists? The answer is clear: because Alfa Romeo has always produced successful coupé cars, eminently usable. «On-road sports cars – explained Antonio Baravalle, Alfa brand manager – represent our top. Think of models such as the 8c 2900 B Coupé, the 6c 2500 Villa d’Este, the 1900 SS, the 2600 Sprint, the Alfetta GT».
Baravalle speaks of a European market that has more than doubled from ’96 to this day and now is worth 2.7%: it means that Brera is meant for a pool of some 600 thousand potential customers in Europe. An attractive share of the pie that this innovative 2+2 model is all set to conquer.
«Alfa Brera – claims Harald Wester, who heads the Engineering and Design sectors of Fiat Auto – is the fruit of a unique heritage: penned by Giugiaro, it was industrialised by Pininfarina that will produce it at their plant in San Giorgio Canavese».
